Genesis has been disruptive to the luxury automobile segment since its inception in 2015. The company's lineup offers highly innovative vehicles loaded with many of the same features found in upper-end luxury brands at a fraction of the price.

The fully redesigned 2021 Genesis G80 midsize sedan is no different, rivaling the BMW 5-series and Audi A6 but with a price tag more in line with a Toyota Avalon or Kia Stinger. Fresh off being named the most dependable auto brand in J.D. Power's 2020 Vehicle Dependability Study, the third generation of the G80 is set to arrive in U.S. dealerships this summer.

The all-new 2021 G80 refines and improves upon everything its predecessor already had right, and that's saying a lot.

Genesis G80 performance

For 2021, the G80 ditched its previously-available V8 engine in favor of two new ones, both of which also power Genesis' new GV80 SUV. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower, while a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with 375 horsepower is also available. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available across the lineup.

Notably, there's a third engine option that will not be available in the United States, a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel with 207 horsepower. According to MotorAuthority, there may also be a plug-in hybrid version of the G80 available at some point.

Technological wonders

Genesis didn't just come to dip its toe in the proverbial pool of luxury vehicles, it came to dive in and swim with the big players. The focal point of the G80's interior is an enormous 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system that sits at the top center of the dashboard and can also be controlled using voice commands, a knob mounted in the center console, and buttons on the steering wheel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are standard, as is the ability to sync with numerous smart-home assistants.

That's just the tip of the technology iceberg — Genesis focused intently on enhancing driver experience and by all measures, it succeeded. You'll find staple driver-assist features including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. You'll also find Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview, a technology similar to the Audi A8's that uses a forward-facing camera to scan the road's condition and appropriately adjust the stiffness of the suspension.

The 2021 Genesis G80 also has available Smart Park, which allows drivers to maneuver in and out of ultra-tight spaces without actually being behind the wheel — or even in the car, for that matter. Most impressive is the G80's Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning (SCC-ML), a feature the world first saw in the GV80. SCC-ML uses AI to learn the driver's patterns over time, then adapts the ride based on those learned behaviors when in semi-autonomous driving modes.

The lap of luxury

Inside, the G80 is downright luxurious. Top-end materials are used throughout, ambient interior lighting is standard, and the already-roomy car became even more spacious for 2021 thanks to a lowered seating height and a deep, sloping roofline reminiscent of much more expensive cars. In addition to the 14.5-inch infotainment screen, a crisp 8-inch digital instrument cluster is standard and there's an option to upgrade it to 12.3 inches and make it 3D.

There are five trim levels to choose from, and even the base model 2.5T comes exceptionally well-equipped.  Opting for the 3.5-liter V6 in either trim level gets you not just a more robust engine, but other highly desirable features including tri-zone climate control, a panoramic roof, and genuine wood trim.
