Kia recently announced that its luxury car, the K900, was cut from the roster for 2021, leaving the latest model as the last of its kind. For people searching for a good deal on a luxury sedan, the 2020 Kia may seem like an appealing option – discontinued new vehicles sometimes come with discounted prices – but there are a few reasons why the 2021 Genesis G90 is (and always has been) a better, more appealing buy. Follow along as we compare the new G90 to the Kia K900.
May the Best Luxury Car Win
Performance
Half of luxury-car buyers put next-level performance at the top of their list. Neither the K900 nor the new G90 will disappoint in that regard, though Genesis’s luxury car gives your heel a bit more to soak up.
Although the new Genesis G90 sedan and outgoing Kia K900 offer the same horsepower (365), torque (376 lb-ft), and base engine (twin-turbo V8), Kia fails to keep up with G90’s available 5.0L V8. That eight-valve powerhouse pummels pavement, supplying 420 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 RPM. It exceeds anything the one-trim-pony K900 Luxury can produce, period.
Interior Comfort
For the other half, high-end comfort and sophistication makes a luxury car. Again, the Genesis G90 puts the K900 in its rearview thanks to a more luxurious, more spacious, and more tech-driven cabin.
22-Way Adjustable Driver’s Seat
You work hard. Treat your spine to a world-class driver’s seat. The Genesis G90 includes a unique 22-way power-adjustable seat that features the innovative Smart Posture Care system, which uses your physical profiles and data to perfectly calibrate and create the ideal seating position. Sit back, relax, and let the G90 automatically adjust the seat, the steering wheel, the side mirrors, and the HUD for you.
The Kia K900 comes close, offering a 20-way adjustable seat, though its Air-Cell Lumbar Support doesn’t hold a candle to the Genesis G90’s Smart Posture Care feature.
More Legroom
Your back and neck aren’t the only parts of your body that deserve a break. With the Genesis G90, you gain more space for your legs to stretch out. In the front, legroom comes in at 46.3 inches; back-seat passengers get 37.8 inches of legroom. Those specs are better than K900’s 45.7 inches and 36.6 inches, respectively.
Rear Seat Entertainment
Now that you’ve got their knees covered, don’t forget about your back-row riders’ retinas. The 2021 G90 comes with an available rear-seat entertainment system that ensures everyone has something to occupy their time. The Genesis entertainment system includes two tiltable 10.3-inch HD touchscreens that work independently; users can connect to their personal media devices, choose individual radio stations, and even adjust climate settings.
The K900 only comes with a rear armrest with climate and infotainment controls, but no dice on screens.
Safety Tech
As excellent luxury sedans, both the G90 and K900 are equipped with some of the most advanced automotive safety features and systems on planet Earth. However, the Genesis does come fitted with a few items that aren’t found in the K900.
Safe Exit Assist
The K900 is void of Safe Exit Assist, which is Genesis’s version of an extra child-lock door. With SEA, the G90 plays hall monitor, watching for oncoming vehicles. If your rear passengers attempt to exit while a vehicle approaches from behind, a warning will be sent to the cabin. Should you have child locks enabled, the G90’s rear doors simply won’t open until SEA gives the all-clear.Speed-Sensitive Wipers
Standard on the G90 5.0 Ultimate, Genesis’s speed-sensitive windshield wipers automatically detect rain and also modulate their speed based on the amount of rain sensed. Kia K900 doesn’t have this as an option.Power Soft-Close Doors
Ever hop in the car, begin driving, and see the “door ajar” light pop up? It’s frustrating – you have to stop somewhere, exit the vehicle, and re-close every door shut.
That's not the case when you own a 2021 Genesis G90. Its soft-close power doors sense when doors aren’t shut fully, then automatically and quietly closes them for you. No need to exit the car.
The same thing can’t be said about the 2020 Kia K900.
Resale Value
Unless they’re rare and highly sought-after, discontinued car models do not keep their resale value well. That's due in equal parts to parts availability, popularity, recognition, and demand. So, if you buy a 2020 K900 new, you’re putting yourself in a bind if you intend to sell it a few years down the line.
A newer model, one that isn’t discontinued, will generally retain their value better. The G90, like the G80, should have a larger market/audience and get you more money when you sell or trade it in after three, five, or even ten years.
Additionally, your G90 comes with a more comprehensive warranty than the Kia K900. Kia’s warranty covers rust/corrosion perforation for 5 years or 100,000 miles; the 2021 Genesis G90 is covered for 7 years with no limit on mileage. That’s what we call “peace of mind.”
