Tires are expensive; run-flats and UHP tires are even more expensive. Anyone who's had to buy one (or a set) knows this. Just a single $0.01 nail can cause hundreds or even thousands of dollars in tire damage. Worst of all, that flat tire or bent rim may rear its ugly head without a moment's notice. Ain't life grand?
While tire and wheel protection coverage may not prevent these hypothetical scenarios from occurring, it does make the end result a whole lot more palatable—and potentially easier on your wallet.
Of course, your tolerance for risks, situation and circumstances may or may not warrant paying for this type of tire protection when you purchase a car. But if any of the following applies to you, we advise you to strongly consider the cost of monthly or prepaid tire insurance to be worth it:
- You're choosing to lease a luxury car, which means returning that luxury car with the same, undamaged tires
- You own a smaller or sportier car with low-profile tires and larger wheels
- You drive daily and across different road types
- Your area is known for having bad road conditions, such as potholes or even sinkholes
- You or other drivers in your family are inexperienced (may hit the occasional curb, for instance)
- Roads are commonly treated with road salt and magnesium chloride, which can damage chrome rims and tire sidewalls
- You keep up with your routine tire rotations, wheel alignments and auto maintenance
- Your normal commute is quite long (over 30 miles per day)
- Tire and wheel damage isn't covered by your auto insurance policy
- You have special or premium tires, such as UHP, run-flats, Genesis tires or something equally unique
For many people, especially those who have had previous bad luck with flats and punctures, tire and wheel protection pays for itself. For the others, they may only end up paying for the extra peace of mind. However, if those "others" had just been one inch closer to that one pothole or nail, that one time, they could have easily landed in the tire shop. When it comes to road hazard warranties, hindsight is 20/20, right?
(Due to the rise of AWD vehicles and a variety of personal safety concerns, it's generally frowned upon to replace just one punctured or blown tire if it cannot be properly repaired. Unless just recently purchased as part of a set, one damaged tire could necessitate the costly replacement of all four, which is yet another reason why people choose to pay for tire and wheel insurance or protection.)
Choose the Right Tire Protection Plan

Each manufacturer has their own set of rules and stipulations for these add-on plans, but the advantages are generally the same: Protect your tires, rims and wheels when the unforeseen happens. With Genesis Tire and Wheel Protection coverage, for instance, you receive the following:
- No deductible when making a claim
- Coverage options that last up to 5 years
- Monthly payment plan when bundled with your vehicle financing
- Unlimited claims and no mileage cap
- Tires, wheels and rims are replaced if they are structurally damaged by a covered road hazard (includes nails, glass, debris, potholes, blowouts and others)
- Covers run-flat tires
- Receive up to $100 in towing reimbursements if your claim is approved
- Coverage is transferable if the vehicle is sold
