Many of us don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the tires on our cars, but perhaps we should give them a few extra moments of thought, because, well, they’re kind of important.

Beyond simply allowing the car to go, the types of tires you have and the condition they’re in have massive effects on how your car drives. Some folks may even consider investing in a special set.

If you’re curious about tires for your Genesis car or SUV, read on to have your frequently asked questions answered.

We usually recommend that our customers buy the same or similar tires that their Genesis had when it rolled off the factory floor. These are otherwise known as OEM (original equipment manufacturer) tires, and they’ve been selected by the manufacturer to optimize the vehicle’s performance.
Generally speaking, most Genesis models—and most cars in general—come with all-season tires, which are sort of the jack-of-all-trades of the tire world. However, depending on where you live and how you drive, you may decide to slap a set of specialty rubber on your luxury car.
Here are some other common types of tires you might consider:

  • All-terrain or A/T tires: These tend to have a somewhat more aggressive tread pattern than all-seasons, which can allow them to negotiate rougher terrain. At the same time, most A/Ts are designed to drive well on pavement. You may consider this type of tire if you like to take your Genesis SUV camping on a regular basis.
  • Winter or snow tires: As the name implies, these tires are optimized for driving in cold weather and can provide much better traction in snowy and icy conditions. Because of the rubber material they’re made of, they aren’t meant to be driven in temperatures above roughly 40 degrees Fahrenheit (if you live near our South Florida Genesis dealership, you’ll probably never need these).
  • Summer tires: These tires are usually made of softer rubber and have tread patterns that perform best in warm weather. Summer tires will give you good performance in wet and dry conditions, but they may not last quite as long as hardier tire types.
  • Performance tires: This type of tire is made for improved handling on pavement and is common on performance vehicles with higher horsepower. There are many subcategories of performance tires, so they tend to have some overlap with other tire types.
Why is Having the Right Kind of Tire Important?

As the only point of contact with the road, your tires are quite literally doing a lot of heavy lifting. The type and condition of your tires will affect every fact of the driving experience, including:

How Can I Make My Tires Last Longer?
A decent set of tires is an investment. Luckily, tires tend to last quite a while, so you shouldn’t have to buy them all that often.
There are many ways to ensure that your tires last as long as possible:
  • Ensure that tires are always at the correct pressure. If you notice one getting low, air it up immediately.
  • Have tires rotated regularly. No, this isn’t just some industry scam to squeeze extra money out of you when you schedule service at your Genesis dealership. Rotating the tires helps them to wear out evenly, which means they’ll last significantly longer. Most people say you should have your tires rotated every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, or about every other oil change, but we recommend following the instructions in your owner’s manual.
  • Drive carefully. Every time you peel out or come screeching to a halt, you’re putting a lot of excess wear on the rubber. Over time, this will shave months off your tire life expectancy.
  • Keep them out of the elements. Excessive heat and cold can wreak havoc on anything made of rubber. Whenever possible, try to park your car in a garage or other place that keeps the tires away from harsh weather.
  • Check your tires. At least once a month, you should inspect all four tires and wheels to make sure there isn’t anything amiss, such as uneven wear. The sooner you notice a problem, the sooner you can get to a service center and have the problem fixed before it becomes a bigger problem.
