Genesis Sweeps the Awards for Top SafetyHere’s a deceptively simple question: “What makes the best family SUV?”

Is it tons of cargo space? Plush, comfortable seating? A variety of futuristic tech features? There’s no doubt that comfort and convenience are all-important, especially in the world of luxury cars. Still, at the end of the day, none of these things are the most important. We’d argue that the most important thing of all is safety.

That’s why we’re proud to announce, for 2023, that the Genesis fleet has earned some of the most impressive safety scores we’ve ever seen.

IIHS Scores Explained

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a nonprofit organization that has been around since the late ‘50s. As the name suggests, one of their main goals is to establish a general baseline for vehicle safety, in order to help consumers to make informed decisions about the safest family vehicles.

For the last couple of decades, the IIHS has given out annual accolades to vehicles that score the highest on their safety standards. There are two tiers of award, the basic Top Safety Pick, and the Top Safety Pick+. Both are coveted in the auto industry, but the TSP+ is considered among the highest honors a specific make and model can receive.

When evaluating a vehicle, the IIHS looks at two main metrics: crash avoidance and mitigation, and crashworthiness (how well a vehicle protects passengers in the event of a crash).

In order to earn a Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn the best scores for small frontal overlap, moderate frontal overlap, and side crash tests. They must also earn advanced scores for vehicle-to-pedestrian crash avoidance, and earn an acceptable score for headlight quality across all trim levels.

Genesis: the Recommended SUV for Families

This year, the Top Safety Pick+ was given to not one, not two, but seven of the current eight new available models:

  • 2024 Genesis Electrified G80
  • 2024 Genesis G80
  • 2023 Genesis G90
  • 2024 Genesis GV60
  • 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70
  • 2024 Genesis GV70
  • 2024 Genesis GV80

It’s also worth noting that the Genesis G70 sedan, the only one not to win this year, won the Top Safety Pick+ in 2022, and was apparently only excluded because the new 2024 model wasn’t released in time for the judging. We don’t know about you, dear reader, but we say that officially makes it a perfect year.

All of these models have been recognized for their exemplary performance when it comes to protecting drivers and passengers in the event of a serious wreck, but that isn’t the only criteria the IIHS considers.

According to global chief safety officer Brian Latouf, “Every Genesis vehicle is designed and engineered with safety at the forefront.” They ensure the safest SUVs for families by including the very best in passive safety features, including at least eight standard airbags and an updated vehicle platform with high-strength steel reinforcement.

Genesis also offers a suite of ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems), including forward collision-avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot view monitor, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, parking distance warning, safe exit assist, advanced rear occupant alert, and rearview camera. Nearly all of these features are standard across all 2024 models, making Genesis among the safest luxury SUVs and cars on the road.
